Empowered by Design: Celebrating Disability, Living Inclusion

💌 From Rut’s Studio

Hello dear creators,

Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and it’s not just a date in the calendar—it’s a reminder of why inclusive fashion isn’t optional.

Too often, disability inclusion is treated as a separate line, a side effort, or a short-term campaign. But inclusion is not an initiative. It’s a mindset.

Whether we’re talking about closures, fabrics, or jewellery—it’s the details that carry dignity. Every design decision sends a message. So, what message are you sending?

In this issue, I’m highlighting examples that show what’s possible when we design with, not for—including a piece from someone close to my heart.

If something resonates (or challenges you), I’d love to hear it.

Hit reply and share what “inclusive design” means to you today.

April Lockhart & Inclusive Chic Jewellery

Designer and disability advocate April Lockhart is rethinking what jewellery means when it’s designed with access in mind—not just aesthetics.

💍 Magnetic bracelets, ergonomic shapes, easy-to-wear elegance… this is adaptive luxury done right.

🧠 What stands out? It’s not marketed as “adaptive”—it’s simply beautiful design, created with real bodies in mind.

Inclusive Tip:
Design doesn’t have to look different to be accessible. Function and fashion can coexist beautifully—when you listen to the wearer from the start.

🧠 Curious About…

Can denim become a tool for healing—and inclusion?

This one’s personal— a Ukrainian brand founded by Svitla Volka, one of my mentees at VORN Academy, is doing something powerful:

The designer’s father lost his legs during the war. Her response? To create denim garments designed to adapt around prosthetics—with dignity, ease, and pride.

This isn’t universal design—but it is meaningful design. Born from urgency, grief, and love. Her denim speaks not just to need, but to resilience.

What would fashion look like if every collection started from a real human story?
